Summer Research Summer Scholarship

The Office of Graduate Studies is pleased to offer Summer Scholarships for the 2019 Summer Session. The scholarship award amount is $5,000 only. Nomination is by department representative only, each department is limited to one (1) nomination.The application will open on January 15, 2019. Nominations are due by 5 pm, Monday, February 26, 2019.

The factors which will be considered in awarding Summer Scholarship include (but are not be limited to):

  • Academic performance
  • A clearly stated proposal with specific details of his/her research plan
  • Nominee is from an under-represented student group
  • Recommendation from the department

Preference will be given to doctoral students who will have completed their comprehensive exams by the last day of class for the 2019 Spring semester.

Enrollment in the 2019 Summer session is required. It is expected that the summer research scholarship would be the student's primary form of support during the summer and that the student would not hold a GTA/GRA/GA appointment concurrent with the award.

To submit a nomination, please complete the online nomination form. The nomination will require three attachments, to be uploaded as either Word or PDF files:

  • A nomination statement by the department (one page)
  • Student’s proposal (one page)
  • Student's curriculum vitae

Nominated students will be awarded one of the scholarships below.


Mary Elizabeth and Andrew P. Debicki Scholarship

The Mary Elizabeth and Andrew P. Debicki Scholarship will provide a $5000 award to a student in the Humanities.


Graduate Studies Diversity Scholarship

The Graduate Studies Diversity Scholarship will provide a $5000 award to a limited number of underrepresented graduate students. Nominees are expected to possess an outstanding academic record. Nominations are to clearly outline how this student is considered underrepresented within the discipline and at KU.


The Dorothy Clark Lettice Scholarship

The Dorothy Clark Lettice Scholarship provides a $5000 award to high quality students. Students awarded the Lettice Scholarship will demonstrate high academic ability as evidenced in the nomination packet.


The John H. Nelson Scholarship

The John H. Nelson Scholarship provides a $5000 award to high quality students. Students awarded the Nelson Scholarship will demonstrate high academic ability as evidenced in the nomination packet. 


Dr. Laiten L. and Verna Nye Camien Scholarship

The Laiten L. and Verna Nye Camien Scholarship will provide a $5000 award to a doctoral student in the Social Sciences, Education or Foreign Languages with the capability and intention of becoming a professional in that field. The student must have received a graduate degree from the University of Kansas. 


William T. Belt Scholarship

The William T. Belt Scholarship will provide a $5000 award to a limited number of underrepresented domestic graduate students. Nominees are expected to possess an outstanding academic record. Nominations are to clearly outline how the student is considered underrepresented within the discipline and at KU.


Jane Harris Scholarship

The Jane Harris Scholarship will provide a $5000 award to a limited number of female domestic graduate students. Nominees are expected to possess an outstanding academic record. Nominations are encouraged within disciplines where women are considered underrepresented within the discipline and at KU.


Fred G. Soxman Memorial Scholarship

The Fred G. Soxman Memorial Scholarship provides a $5000 award to a graduate student who has received at least one University of Kansas Athletic Letter for participation in an intercollegiate sport. The student must have received an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas.
