The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, KS. Founded in 1854 along the banks of the Kansas River, we are 45 minutes west of Kansas City and 30 minutes east of Topeka, the state capital. A town of just under 100,000, we are a quintessential college town and a great blend of big city and small town life. From farmer’s markets and the county fair, to film festivals and a vibrant music and arts scene, we have something for everyone.

About Lawrence

The KU campus is located near the historic heart of Lawrence and Massachusetts Street or “Mass Street” where students will find diverse dining options, locally-owned coffee shops and stores. The campus is surrounded by historic neighborhoods and an active arts community.

Located on the top of Mt. Oread, the water divide between the Kansas and Wakarusa rivers, the KU Lawrence campus is home to 6,000 graduate students across 13 schools.

Transportation & Travel

On Campus and In Lawrence

Public Transit

KU on Wheels is a free bus service to all students and services the KU campus. See details about routes, times, and pick up/drop off locations at the KU on Wheels website

Lawrence Transit coordinates with KU on Wheels to provide transportation service to students traveling off campus to the surrounding city of Lawrence. University students can ride all buses for free by showing their KU Card upon boarding.

SafeRide & SafeBus

SafeRide is a student-sponsored transportation service that provides a safe ride home for KU students at night. A SafeRide driver will pick up passengers (whether at the library, a bar, work, etc.) and drive them home anywhere within city limits. Drivers will not take passengers to another bar.

Due to increased usage of SafeRide, KU is currently piloting a limited late night bus route called SafeBus that will drive between 10:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. on two routes a popular destinations such as KU residence halls, downtown Lawrence and the neighborhood around 14th and Tennessee Streets.

Outside of Lawrence

Airports

Kansas City International (MCI) Airport is located 50 minutes northeast of Lawrence. Economy parking is available at the airport and there are numerous shuttle services from Lawrence to MCI. KU does schedule shuttle services during select times of the year. For more information visit the Shuttle Services information page. 

Bus & Train

Lawrence is serviced by both Greyhound and Amtrak for travel to surrounding cities. Both stations are located in downtown Lawrence. Review schedules and services in the sidebar links.

K-10 Connector to KU Edwards and Johnson County Community College

There is also public transportation to limited locations in Kansas City via RideKC on the K-10 Connector, including to the KU Edwards and Johnson County Community College campuses. Learn more about the routes, stops, and cost at the RideKC website.
